How To Choose The Best Fashion School For You

Each person has their own interpretation of the word ‘best’ and it means something different to each of us.  That’s why you should carefully check out any business that claims to the best. 

In finding the fashion school best suited to your needs, you will have to shop and compare among many schools.   There are many things to consider as you make your decision.  Below are five considered to be among the most important:

Cost:  The most expensive is not always the best.  Some people equate quality with cost, so certain schools charge ridiculous fees in order to appear exclusive and attract more students.  If it’s expensive it has to be good.  While fashion schools are not cheap, you do not have to sign away your life to find a good one.  So do not use cost alone to judge what school would be best for you.

Location:  Some people consider the only fashion schools worth attending are located in Europe.  There is some validity to this argument as schools that are located in European fashion centers are usually more in touch with the world of fashion.  If this is what you want, Europe may be the place for you.

Prestige:  The fashion schools with high visibility, the ones frequently featured in popular magazines and on television, are considered by many to be prestigious schools and that if they attend these schools, the aura would rub off on them.   But sometimes the best schools are the ones that keep a low profile, concentrating all of their energies on the education of their students.  You can usually find these schools through word of mouth from their former students.

Instructors:  While the lure of working under a famous designer is irresistible to some students, there are drawbacks.  Unless the designer has retired for the period that they are teaching the classes, they will always concentrate most of their time and energy on their new work.  They will also be using the students as unpaid labor on their designs and neglect the teaching aspect of their job.

Alumni:  If a widely known fashion designer graduated from a certain school, many people would consider that the best school.  While that may be true to a certain extent, a genuinely talented designer could possibly do well at any good school where they receive the proper grounding in fashion design.   A person needs a large amount of natural talent to reach the top of the fashion design industry.  This talent, combined with the proper schooling, is what produces the top fashion designers.
