High school is a time for teenagers to socialize, to assert their independence, to refine their identity.   These identities are reflected in modern high school fashions.  Some of the various fashion statements include:

The Rocker:  Favored by rock band fans, they make a statement with their clothes, often imitating the look of their favorite band member or wearing shirts sporting pictures of their band. 

This particular fashion statement often includes accessories such as studded bracelets or armbands, medallions suspended from heavy neck chains or body jewelry.  You need a certain attitude to go with this fashion statement and you will be passionate about the music.  Other accessories could be a musical instrument used in your band such as a guitar or even just the guitar case or a pair of drumsticks, often used as hair ornaments.

The Jock:  Donning the varsity team jacket will instantly transform any student into a jock.  Some teens hide their poor fashion sense behind the large letters and high school colors.  Anyone who wins a place on any of the school teams has earned the right to wear a team jacket and thus they are ‘jocks.’

The Goth:  The Goth fashion statement can be summed up in one word:  black.   This look is often unsettling to adults but the teen is only expressing his or her angst.  All of their accessories are black and they sport heavy black eyeliner and lipstick.  Although considered by the teens sporting this look as a way to express their individuality, it is really a means of fitting in with a certain group, to belong.

The Geek:  The geek used to be considered the lowest rung on the clique ladder, easily distinguished by their undistinguished clothing and clean cut demeanor.  Geeks were traditionally much too busy with their slide rules, calculators and, more recently, computers to worry too much about their looks.  The tables have turned these days as the overwhelming use of computers have turned these geeks into a much sought-after commodity.

The Gamer:  The role playing gamers have been elevated to the status of world class cyber athletes.  Once considered Satan worshippers, the influence of the sophisticated games today have changed the way the world looks at them.  The Gamer look is whatever they are wearing.  Saving the world is much more important than what you are wearing, but a shirt sporting some technological jargon helps the look.

The Fashionista:  This look is difficult to carry off as well as being very expensive because you must always be wearing the latest high school fashion.  Fashionistas spend a lot of time poring through fashion magazines and visiting upscale boutiques, constantly on the lookout for the newest, trendiest looks.  A true Fashionista establishes and maintains the highest standard of high school fashion
