Need Fashion Advice? Fashion Magazines Are Great Idea Banks!

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Some women are natural dressers, with an eye for fashion, color, shoes and accessories. They can throw on any old thing and it all comes together and looks great. Other women agonize daily over every outfit and somehow it just doesn't come off.

While you may not have this enviable natural talent with fashion, you can learn. What? A fashion class? No, you can learn for free or for just the price of your favorite fashion magazine.

So how do you choose which fashion magazine that will teach you want you want to know? First, pick one that features fashions for your age group. An older woman isn't going to get the fashion flair, advice or beauty tips she needs from a magazine geared to teens.

While teens can get away with more radical fashions and hair styles, adults tend to look like they're trying to look much younger. The results often look silly and date you as a wannabe teen. Older teens can go both ways. Teens nearing adulthood can put some sophistication into their wardrobe choices by picking up an issue of Vogue(R).

Fashion magazines for teens are filled with teen hair, skin and nail look features and ads. These can give you a sense of what's hot and what's not, as well as products and articles that show you how to deal with teen problems such as acne.

The fashions and accessories are not what you'll see your Mom wearing. Retro looks are big, and hair styles are more flashy. The models shown put the look together for you.

You can learn how to do this for yourself by studying the model's outfits in total. See what color combinations are used together in clothes, shoes and accessories.

You might not have thought to wear a lime green dress paired with a broad-brimmed bright pink hat with matching shoes. You needn't copy that exact combination. What's to be observed is that bright, contrasting colors can work well for a stunning look. Look at lipstick and eyeshadow colors that complement the look.

If you're too old for the teen looks, fashion magazines like Vogue(R) and Elle(R) can give similar insights. These magazines exemplify sophistication and glamour.

Clothing, accessories and jewelry are simpler but more elegant. Study the pictures of the models in all their show stopping glory. Clothing cuts are important.

Older women may have more figure problems than teens. If your waist has grown from tiny to slightly ample over the years, take that into consideration. Look for clothes that deemphasize the waist. Check out hair styles which might update your current do. These sophisticated magazines often include scratch-off scents of wonderful perfumes you may want to buy.

You can see that fashion magazines that are age-appropriate, can be a boon to the fashion-unconscious woman. Study and learn. This method pays. You can have that fashion flair too!

Fashion Conscious? Sometimes The Question Is What Not To Wear!

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Fashion magazines and department store mannequins typically display the look to have, what to wear and how to be a successful fashionisto. Some of us don't have that elusive flair for fashion and attempt to put together a stunning costume for a special occasion which falls flat on its fashion face! How do the models do it? How does my sister do it?

Sometimes, the question is not so much what to wear, but what not to wear. Let's take a look at some of the fashion caveats that will help you avoid inappropriate selections.

Let's say you've been invited to a wedding. Such a special occasion warrants a special costume, right? The caveat here is that you don't want to outshine the wedding party!

Although your choice of a shimmery, sequined shawl over that fabulous dress may be beautiful and well suited to a hot dinner date, it won't work for the wedding. This costume is, in fact, too lovely. You'll garner a lot of attention, but your hosts may feel you're trying to upstage them. A classic case of what not to wear.

How about the hot dinner date? Maybe your date is the conservative type. Wanting to impress him with your stateliness, you opt for a lovely wool suit and a string of pearls. Guess what? This is another what not to wear mistake. Albeit conservative, a sexy dress that's not too revealing, paired with high heels and delicate, sparkly jewelry will make him proud to be with such a dazzling lady.

Today, your fashion quandary is what to wear for a lunch with your girlfriends at the boardwalk. This outing is not about impressing men, but a casual date with friends. Girls. Don't let your insecurity show by dressing to the nines.

You'll only alienate your friends and make them feel underdressed. Go casual and cute, as befits the occasion. Tall, shiny boots and a short skirt are the epitome of what not to wear here.

Office dress is often misconstrued by the aspiring fashionisto. At work, it's important that you dress professionally.

Unless today's the office Christmas party, stick with classic and unpretentious styles for daily wear. Even if there's someone new at work who's caught your eye, resist the temptation to look the vamp during office hours. Vampy costumes in the office are definitely what not to wear. Save it for the date.

In summary, knowing what not to wear becomes natural if you take your companions and hosts into your consideration. If your costume may make others uncomfortable for whatever reason, modify your costume choice such that you'll look in place while still being attractive.

One last tip: if that guy who asked you out is just your height, don't wear high heels!
