Protect Hair From Heat

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

Your hair is your crowning glory and it should be protected from damage. To keep your hair looking healthy, you need to learn how to protect hair from heat. Heat can be very damaging to the hair, making it look dull and lifeless.

But most of us use hair dryers, straighteners or curling irons almost every day to get just the right look. This consistent, daily use of heat against the hair shaft will cause damage to the hair making it appear more frizzy with fly aways.

To protect hair from heat, start by thinking about sun protection. The sun can actually sunburn the hair and make color fade. The sun can also make the hair turn straw like and frizzy. The best way to protect your hair from the sun is to wear a hat made of densely woven material. Make sure that your hat covers your entire head.

Another way to protect hair from the heat of the sun is to use hair products that contain sunscreen. These hair care products contain specific ingredients that will block the damaging UV rays that come from the sun.

When styling your hair at home, never try to curl your hair when it is wet. If you attempt to curl your hair while it is still wet, you can do severe damage to the hair. This damage will cause split ends and make the hair look dull and lifeless.

After showering, remove as much moisture as possible with a towel. Blow dry the hair on the lowest heat setting. When all of the excess moisture is removed from the hair, apply a heat protective product to protect the hair from further heat damage. This will make the hair look smooth and shiny.

If you notice that your hair is looking dry or lackluster, you may want to try taking vitamins for your hair to make your hair look healthier and shiner. Vitamins rich in zinc and Biotin will help the hair to be healthy and make it to grow. Vitamins can also help repair hair damage from heat and other styling products.

Avoid using very hot irons on the hair to protect hair from heat. If you have thin hair, it is best to use a curling iron on the lowest setting. Keep your hair trimmed and remove split ends often.

If you are out in the sun a lot, you should use a good hair conditioner often. It is a good idea to switch shampoos often. Use a good cleansing shampoo once a month to remove all buildup from styling products. A cleansing product will keep your hair healthy and better protected from heat damage.

If you want to have healthy looking hair, then you need to protect hair from heat and damage. Heat can destroy hair faster than anything else. Take good care of your hair and you will have a beautiful head of hair that will have people turning their heads to do a double take.

Hair Color At Home

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

Hair color at home can be a success if you know what you are doing. It is important to choose the right hair color for your skin tone. There are so many different shades of hair color on the market today that it is easy to get overwhelmed when trying to choose the right shade.

If you are thinking about going blond, look at your skin tone. If you have sallow skin with yellow undertones, then deep gold shades of hair color should be avoided. If you have pink skin, stay away from strawberry shades. It is best to play it safe and go only a few shades lighter than your normal hair color.

Women with dark hair need to be careful when choosing to do hair color at home. A woman who has pale skin should not go too dark with their hair color. If the hair color is too dark, it can make her look older and somewhat ghostly.

Hair coloring kits have come a long way in the past decade. These kits are now higher quality and easier to use. When shopping for a home hair color kit, it is best to buy a brand name that is recognizable.

Over the counter coloring kits can be purchased at department stores, pharmacies and health food stores. The kits at the health food stores are often made of chemicals that are a bit safer for your health. But because they don't have certain chemicals they also aren't permanent.

Hair coloring kits are permanent and semi-permanent. The semi-permanent color will eventually wash out and fade – usually over six weeks if the hair is washed every other day. If you participate in athletic activities and wash your hair more often the hair color made fade more quickly.

A great way to prevent hair color from staining the skin surrounding the hair line is to rub Vaseline around the hair line before starting to color. This will prevent any running hair color from staining the surrounding skin. When finished coloring the hair, simply rub off the Vaseline with a cream cleanser and a cotton ball.

Before you try to hair color at home, it is important that you gather some much needed supplies. You will need an old t-shirt, a towel and a washcloth that you dont mind getting stained. Hair clips to section off the hair and a hand mirror that you can use to see the back of your hair are other essential items when coloring your hair at home.

If you did your hair color at home and do not like it, there are products that can help to fix the problem. But fixing a bad hair color job will not be easy. Whatever you do, do not buy a box of your original shade of hair color and try to cover it, because this just will not work. If you do not like your hair color, it may be safer to go to the salon to get it fixed.

Once you have finished your hair color at home and are enjoying your new look, you need to make sure you take steps to maintain that color as long as possible. It is important that you use a color enhancing shampoo and a color enhancing conditioner at least once a week to keep your new hair color vibrant.

Some of the hair coloring kits also come with conditioner that should be used mid-way between coloring to maintain the color and shine. Mark your calendar to be sure you use the conditioner when it's appropriate.

Learn Diabetic Nail Care

Friday, December 5th, 2008

For people that have diabetes, it is vitally important that they learn diabetic
nail care. The nails protect the fingers and toes from injury and trauma. Diabetics
have decreased sensation in the fingers and toes, so it is critical that the nails
are kept in good condition.

What many people do not realize is the condition of your nails can be a great
indicator of health problems. The healthy fingernails and toenails will be smooth,
slightly curved and somewhat pink. If the nails are not healthy looking, this may
indicate some type of underlying disease.

Diabetes are very prone to developing a fungal infection that is known as
onychomycosis. This fungal infection accounts for approximately 50% of all nail infections. Onychomycosis will produce thick, brittle nails that can develop sharp points and do injury to the surrounding skin.

The problem with diabetics and this fungal infection is that diabetics have decreased sensation in the fingertips and toes. The fingers and toes may have small cuts that go unnoticed by the diabetic. These cuts are the portal of entry for the bacteria.

To keep the nails from developing fungal infection, it is important that all
diabetics learn diabetic nail care. If the fungal infections go untreated they can
lead to foot ulcers and gangrene. Many diabetics have lost part of a foot or even
a whole foot from diabetic foot ulcers.

The best way to keep nails free from fungus is to have good hygiene. Keep the
fingernails and toenails clean and make sure to dry the feet thoroughly before
putting on socks and shoes. If using a public shower facility or at a public pool,
always wear shoes or sandals. A person with diabetes should only wear comfortable fitting shoes that are not too tight. Diabetics should only wear synthetic socks that will wick moisture away from the skin of the feet.

Another important point to learn about diabetic nail care is that artificial
nails should not be used. Artificial nails trap water under the nails and this
moisture will promote fungus growth. Nail care tools should be kept very clean
and sterilized with alcohol before each use.

Diabetics should learn diabetic nail care to not only preserve the integrity of
the nails, but to also be able to determine the presence of other underlying diseases. When caring for the nails, take note if they look unusually pale or white. Pale looking nails could indicate anemia. If the nails are shaped like the back of a spoon, this could indicate lung disease, cancer or an infection. If any changes in the nails are noticed, it is critical to let your doctor know right away.

Diabetics will also find that nail care of the lower extremities will also help to improve their health and well-being. Because diabetics often suffer from peripheral vascular compromise it is easier for them to suffer from infections which can lead to drastic measures – including amputation. By caring for the feet and nails carefully diabetics can often find problems early before such drastic measures must be taken.

History Of Nail Care

Friday, December 5th, 2008

The history of nail care can be traced as far back as ancient Egypt. Ancient Egyptian writings talk of how women and even men put rouge on their cheeks, painted around their eyes and reddened the palms of their hands and nails by using henna. Three thousand year old, gold manicure tools have been found in Egyptian tombs.

In ancient Egypt, having long, red nails was a sign of freedom from labor. Well manicured nails were reserved for people of only the highest status in society. Queen Nefertiti of Egypt declared that red nail coloring was only allowed to be worn by nobles.

The people of China associated long nails with nobility, so the men of high status would grow their nails very long.

Fast forward to the 1930s when the big movie stars of the time started using nitrocellulose based nail polishes that was introduced after World War I. People were looking to Hollywood for the new styles. Nail care and nail polishes were made popular by the glamorous women of the big screen.

During the 1940s, women were striving to have long, glamorous nails like the legendary actresses of their time. The variety of colors for nails polishes increased significantly. But alas, long glamorous nails were reserved once again for those who did not have to work with their hands.

In the 1960s, nail polish colors became fun and a little bit funky to reflect the times. Nail polish colors such as yellow, purple, green and blue emerged. False nails also became popular with women who were too busy or did not have the money for a professional manicure. Plastic preformed nails were glued to the natural nails and then filed and shaped.

The history of nail care continues into the 1980s when cosmetic companies started offering gauze, silk and paper patches that were used to repair broken nails. It was during this time that sculptured and wrapped nails became popular. During the 1990s, French manicures were all the rage.

The working environment transforms from a more physical labor to more desk jobs and technical jobs. This type of working environment is much easier on the nails and allows women and men to maintain professional manicure much longer.

As the history of nail care progresses, women have started spending more and more money on nail care products. The professional woman of today knows that a well put together look is important. That professional look includes well manicured nails.

Don't think that nail care is reserved for women only. Men are now getting manicures to enhance their looks. The professional businessman of today will spend quite a bit of time and money to have the perfect manicure. Today business men find that their appearance isn’t judged solely on the suit and shoes but rather on the total package. Even on first dates women will check out a man’s hands. If they take care of their hands and are attentive to personal hygiene they more than likely also take care of their homes and other personal details.

The history of nail care takes place from the time of the Egyptians through to the present day and age. While the process or presentation may have changed the objective of having well manicured hands to present to the world as a symbol of good care hasn’t. Take good care of your nails and they’ll take care of you!

Using The Curling Iron

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

Using the curling iron can give a woman the hairstyle of her dreams. If she has naturally straight hair, a curling iron can give her curl. If she has naturally curly hair, a heated straightening iron can make it straight.

A curling iron is safe to use every day if you properly condition the hair. Curling irons come with different types of coatings. Chrome is the most common type of coating found on a curling iron. These chrome plated curling irons are safe to use on all hair types. The newest type of coating on curling irons and straightening irons is ceramic. These ceramic coated irons distribute the heat more evenly throughout the iron without creating hot spots. The new ceramic plated curling irons are safe to use on all hair types.

Before you begin using the curling iron, you need to decide on the proper barrel size for your type of hair. A inch barrel size is good for short hair. A 1 inch curling iron barrel is great for short to medium hair. A 1 inch barrel is used mostly for mid-length and long styles. If you need to smooth out waves and give a slight bend to the ends of your hair, then you should choose a 2 inch barrel on your curling iron.

When looking to purchase a curling iron, you should look for one that has multiple settings. This will allow you to have a choice if your needs should change. It is also a good idea to find a curling iron that has an automatic shut off. If you leave the house and forget to shut off the curling iron, it will shut itself off after so many minutes of non-use.

When using the curling iron, it is important to curl small sections of the hair at a time. If you try to wrap too much hair around the curling iron, you will have to re-wrap the same section of hair several times. Small amounts of hair should only take about 5 seconds to curl. Always make sure that the ends of the hair are firmly in place before closing the curling iron.

It is important that you curl only dry hair. When you curl hair that is even slightly damp, you can cause severe damage to the hair. You can use a styling product when you curl your hair to make your curls last longer.

After using the curling iron on a section of hair, wait until the hair is cooled before you touch it. If you mess with the hair while it is still warm, you could lose the curl. After the hair is cool, loosen the curls with your fingers and then spray the curls with your favorite styling spray.

Using the curling iron helps many women to create the look and hair style that they desire. Using products to protect the hair from heat damage allows women to continue to use heat related products.
